Goal Setting for Business Success

Setting your goals is one of the most important activities you can do in your business. Laying down plans for your business and drawing up a list of goals will help you stay focused and will prevent your business from becoming stagnant. Your business goals keep you moving forward and set the stage for ongoing success.

Although we often think of goal setting as something we do at the start of every year, the truth is that it is extremely important to work on your business goals all year long. You should be setting goals multiple times each year, tracking the progress, and refining the strategies you are following in order to achieve your goals on an ongoing basis.

Here is a list of actions that will assist you in setting your goals and staying on track!

Analyse 2018 Business Data

To understand and set realistic goals for 2019, it is imperative to measure and analyse the data from 2018.  This involves examining how many new clients you averaged each month and the average net profit per customer.

It is important to establish if you had certain months that were more profitable than others and why this was the case.

  • Are you proactively watching and measuring what money is coming in and going out of your business every month?
  • Do you have an ongoing budget to guide your expenditures so that you know which months will experience a spike in outgoings?

These are the types of metrics in your sales history that will help you develop a month-by-month forecast of the level of sales you can expect to achieve.

Top Quality Customer Service

How are you measuring customer satisfaction? It is imperative that you have a good communications process in place to receive customer feedback to ensure their satisfaction with your business, products and services.

If you only have one goal in 2019, I suggest it should be focusing your efforts on making your customer service exceptionally good especially when handling customer complaints.  Think about ways to incorporate customer service into your social media practices, as this will help to establish your business as a leader in this area. Don’t be shy to ask your customers for feedback in order to identify what your business can be doing better. Our greatest learning will come from our existing customer base.

Increase Online Traffic

An important goal for every business in 2019 is to generate more online traffic to your website and social media sites as it will lead to increased sales and customer loyalty. It’s not enough to produce great content and hope that people find it, you have to be proactive!

One of the best ways to increase traffic to your website is to use social media to promote your content. Twitter is ideal for short, snappy links, whereas Google+ promotion can help your site show up in personalised search results and seems especially effective in business to business. If you are targeting customers directly then the image and video focused social sites like Facebook and Instagram can work wonders.

Optimizing your content for search engines is still a valuable and worthwhile practice. Are you making the most of image alt text? Are you creating internal links to new content? What about meta descriptions? Optimizing for on page SEO doesn’t have to take ages, and it could help boost your organic traffic.

Develop An Expert LinkedIn Profile

I’m a huge fan of LinkedIn, especially as in recent times it has become much more than a means of finding another job. The world’s largest professional social network is now a valuable publishing platform in its own right, which means you should be posting content to LinkedIn on a regular basis. Doing so can boost traffic to your site, as well as increase your profile within your industry especially if you have 500+ connections.  Spend time building your network and make sure you engage with your connections.
